I don't know...I remembered something...like this has happened before.

Besides Homura and Feliciano teaching Hiro on how to defend himself, Lovino acts as Hiro's bodyguard along with Daisy. While Homura and Feliciano focus on weaponry, Daisy and Lovino were Hiro's teachers focusing on hand to hand combat. In which in this case, Lovino is teaching Hiro a martial art called Arnis (Known as Kali or Eskrima). 

*Arnis/Eskrima/Kali is a Filipino martial art that uses defense mostly in battles. When battling an opponent, fighters can use

ANY TYPES OF WEAPONS!

Whether they are sticks, knifes, or any nearby objects such as newspapers and car keys as long as it is usable in battle. Heck, flashlights and fans can be deadly weapons when used it properly. However, the common weapon is used are mostly sticks/batons.
When in 'Mano Mano' or hand to hand combat, fighters you can mostly see in shows or movies or in real life are normal people against muggers (The ones who wanted to steal). When the person wants to duel with the thief who mostly brings out a knife just to scare people off, the person made a plan to counter the attacks by various defensive joint locks (Seriously, those fools are just as coward as we are. And I hate people who went to the path of continuous corruption...so not fair to the innocents!). Those joint locks can be deadly, though. What technique used in here is called "Labai".
Fortunately, this is not illegal in my country and some schools has a subject that teaches Arnis since it is a national sport for us Filipinos. The downside? No one ever applied this in bad case scenarios and the martial art is soon to be forgotten.

Several techniques in Arnis are quite similar in Karate such as in their joint locks, knockouts, defences, and others.

In the Cross Family, Lovino teaches Hiro Arnis in order for him to defend himself from the bullies. Seriously, I saw a lot of students carry a knife. Just in case Hiro got cornered again by some bullies again at this time with no dirty mercy, then he have to use those techniques just to escape even once.
In training, Hiro felt something in his memory that this has happened before...


In media, Arnis/Eskrima/Kali is used in movies like in Kick-ass. No one ever noticed that MOST of the movies that involves fighting uses the Filipino martial art because not only it looks good in camera but also it applies to the actors and actresses on what they learned.

In Sora Matsuki's/MiraStone Big Hero 6 fan fiction called "Til I'm gone" of the first arc in the chapter in the aftermath when Hiro almost committed suicide when Andrews posted a video of him and his friends dunked Hiro's head in the toilet (The title of the video in the story was "Genius takes for a swim". razzlepazzledoodot had a picture of Hiro's goodbye video). By the time Hiro was recovering, Tadashi confronted Andrews for almost killing his little brother. Tadashi didn't let his temper corrupt him and just sparred Andrews...that's until that bully PULLED OUT A KNIFE OUT OF HIS PANTS! Fortunately, Tadashi was able to use Karate to subdue and humiliate Andrews at the same time. 
In the second arc, where Thomas abducted Fred when he sacrificed himself to save Hiro from...dirty pervertic stuffs he will suffer. Tadashi was able to save Fred, and Hiro got the chance to hit Thomas with a chair! Tadashi also used Karate against Thomas when he tried to kill Tadashi and have Fred for himself...
(Basically, Andrews is Hiro's bully in the first arc while Thomas is Hiro's stalker in the second arc. Yet, those two are both bunch of dirty poops from public toilets in the SAME TIME  ! Like I am going to shoot them with a gun or something... oh yeah..."Revenge, no matter what form, was rather sweet.")
